Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is SOAR?

Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) is Cal State San Bernardino's New Student Orientation program for new undergraduate students (both freshmen and transfer students). At SOAR, you will have an opportunity to meet other new students, discuss academic choices with advisors, explore majors and career options, get a feel for life on campus, introduce you to campus resources and get acquainted with Cal State San Bernardino. SOAR provides you with key resources and tools to help ease the transition into the CSUSB community and prepare you for life as a Coyote.

  • Why do I have to attend SOAR?

All new undergraduate students are REQUIRED to attend SOAR in order to register for classes. A SOAR hold is put on a student's account until they have successfully completed SOAR.

SOAR provides each student an opportunity to get all of the questions answered and feel comfortable with the expectations that will be required here at CSUSB. Also, CSUSB's faculty, staff, and administrators want to welcome you to the best time of your life!

  • How do I sign up for SOAR?

Once you have paid your $100 confirmation deposit to CSUSB, you will be able to sign up for SOAR. You will log onto your MyCoyote portal to register for SOAR session date, pending that there is space available in a particular session. Registration for transfer students opens in March and SOAR registration for first-time freshmen opens in May.

  • My Student Center says that I have a "SOAR hold." What exactly does that mean?

The "SOAR Hold" is an advising hold that will be removed AFTER you attend SOAR. If you have attended SOAR and the hold is still active on your account, please contact the Orientation and First Year Experience office at (909) 537-5233.

  • How can I make a change to my SOAR registration?

The SOAR registration system does not allow you to make changes on your own. To change your SOAR registration, send an email to orientation@csusb.edu with your name, Coyote ID number, your SOAR date and the date you would like to change to. There will be a $25.00 fee for changing your date more than once. Please note that changing into another SOAR session date is contingent upon that session having space available.

  • Do I need to bring my parents / family with me?

It is not required for parents / family members to attend SOAR with you, however we do have a family orientation program just for them. We strongly encourage family members to attend our Parent and Family Orientation. This is a good time to learn about resources available at CSUSB to help families support their students. Your family can also learn about Parent and Family Orientation and special events just for them by visiting the Parent Family Orientation page. Parent and Famil Orientation is only offered concurrently with our freshmen orientation program.

  • What is the fee to participate in SOAR?

All newly admitted undergraduate students will be charged a $68.36 mandatory SOAR fee, which will appear on your student account after class registration. All first-time freshmen attending San Bernardino or Palm Desert SOAR sessions will be charged an additional $85 service fee for a total of $153.36 for the 2-day program. ($68.36 mandatory fee, $85 services fee). For more information on the fees associated with SOAR, please see the SOAR Fee Policy page.

  • Can I get a refund for my SOAR fee?

SOAR fees are non-refundable. If you do not attend the required sessions, you are still responsible for paying the fee. You will also be charged a no-show fee should you miss your scheduled date in the summer. For more information on the fees associated with SOAR, please see the SOAR Fee Policy page.

  • When and how do I register for classes?

During SOAR, you will receive advising so that you can register for classes. Transfer students will register during their scheduled appointments through MyCoyote. Freshmen students will register for classes during their SOAR session.

  • I still need to take the ELM and/or EPT. Can I still sign up for SOAR?

You must take your placement exams before registering for orientation. Based on your scores on the EPT or ELM, you may or may not need to attend Coyote First Step. If you need to take Coyote First STEP classes, you will need to have registered for those classes before registering for SOAR.

  • I missed the ELM and/or EPT that I was registered for. What should I do?

You should take the next available scheduled test. Contact Testing and Tutoring at (909) 537-5045 regarding your situation and further EPT/ELM information.

  • Is the Freshman Seminar (USTD 100a) mandatory for all freshmen?

Freshman Seminar is mandatory for all UNDECLARED freshmen and it is HIGHLY recommended for ALL new freshmen. Students who take this course have a higher continuation rate for the following academic year than the university's overall rate.

  • Do I have to be there for the entire SOAR session?

You must be present for the entire SOAR session. Transfer orientation is a one-day program while our freshmen is a 2 day, overnight experience. Please select your SOAR session carefully and plan accordingly for work, childcare, vacations and other conflicts.

  • What if I can't attend any of the program dates?

If extenuating circumstances make it impossible for you to attend any of the scheduled sessions, please contact us at orientation@csusb.edu. However, this is college and we expect you to make this a top priority! Only extenuating circumstances will be reviewed.

  • Can I bring a friend or significant other with me to SOAR?

SOAR is only for admitted CSUSB students; guests are not permitted due to space availability.

  • When do I need to turn in my final transcript(s)?

Final documents such as transcripts are due in the Admissions Office by July 1 for the fall quarter. For the Winter and Spring quarters, please contact the Office of Admissions at (909) 537-5188 for final document deadlines.

  • I am taking classes at the Palm Desert Campus. Do I have to attend SOAR?

In order to attend SOAR at the Palm Desert Campus, your major must be offered at PDC. Otherwise, you must attend SOAR at the San Bernardino campus. For more details about SOAR@PDC, visit their website or call them at (760) 341-2883 ext. 78115.
